I decided to complete a work term outside Ottawa because the opportunity to work in the field of astronomy was too good to pass up. In addition, I had lived in B.C. previously and loved every minute of it.
This CO-OP experience helped me learn how to accept criticism. No one enjoys being told about their shortcomings, but it’s necessary to be made aware of them in order to improve. This experience also taught me how to act like a professional and brought both my strengths and weaknesses to the surface.
I would definitely suggest to all students to live a similar experience. Taking a job that is completely out of your field, on top of trying to make your way in a new city, is an enormous challenge but a good one. It forces you to confront every aspect of yourself and helps clarify what you do and do not want in a future career. If you never challenge yourself, you will never change.
