CO-OP student of the month of January 2018
Program of study: International Economics and Development
During my CO-OP placement as a desk officer at Global Affairs, my eyes were opened to a whole new side of Canada’s federal government. I was responsible for working on Libya and Egypt within a team that covered trade, development and foreign policy. During my placement, I prepared briefing materials for ministers and senior management, and helped shape policy recommendations on Canada’s engagement with Libya and Egypt. I was also fortunate to be given the opportunity to travel to Washington, D.C. with the Director General and to assist in planning an event hosted in Ottawa by the Minister for International Development and La Francophonie. The highlight of the four months I spent at Global Affairs was the privilege of lighting up the CN Tower in the colours of the Egyptian flag to honour the victims of the November terrorist attack. It was incredible to see the direct impact of our work and to be able to do something meaningful for another country.
It was very refreshing to be excited to go to work every day, and the people I worked with were some of the friendliest, most knowledgeable people I have ever met.
