An investment that works

By hiring a CO-OP student from the University of Ottawa, you invest in a winning combination! You get a motivated and enthusiastic employee while giving a student the chance to put his or her academic training to the test. The University of Ottawa is the place to recruit CO-OP students!

Only the top students are admitted to the program. Each one has achieved a cumulative grade point average of at least 6 out of 10 (a B average). Students begin their first work term after having completed two and a half years of study which gives them a strong academic background to help them succeed on the job. Students are available year-round.You may choose French-speaking, English-speaking or bilingual students. The sequence of work and study terms is shown below.

Skills that are in demand

Before being placed in their first work-term experience, Accounting CO-OP students have developed an in-depth understanding of specialized computing applications and are familiar with balance sheets, income statements and cash flow statements. They have successfully completed courses in

  • Macro- and micro-economics
  • Mathematics
  • Computing principles
  • Statistics
  • Marketing
  • Financial and managerial accounting
  • Organizational behaviour
  • Income tax
  • Audits

In addition, group projects are a key component of most courses. This training means interns will integrate quickly into your work environment, becoming a productive member of your team in no time.

N.B.: -- The Institute of Chartered Accountants of Ontario, the Society of Management Accountants of Ontario, and the Certified General Accountants Associations of Canada and Ontario have given their accreditation to the University of Ottawa’s CO-OP Education Program. That means that the 12 months that each student spends as an intern will count towards the experience requirements for those professional designations. Only work-terms completed with firms that have the Institute of Chartered Accountants accreditation will be recognized towards the CPA designation.
