Peyman S. Mahmoudian
CO-OP Student of the Month of April 2019
The CO-OP program is the perfect opportunity to take on new challenges and explore different fields. Passionate in helping vulnerable members of society, I decided to work as my first placement in Clinique de droit notarial de l'Outaouais, a legal clinic where I could apply my knowledge of law. During this placement, I had a chance to dedicate all my efforts in promoting access to justice to citizens. My duties consisted primarily of meeting with citizens and providing them with legal information related to their cases.
For my second placement, I decided to get out of my comfort zone and work in a completely different field. This time, I opted for a placement with the Canada Revenue Agency (CRA), my first time working in the public service. During my four months at the CRA, I analysed applications from different organizations seeking to register as charities. In addition to quickly becoming familiar with a law of which I had no previous knowledge, I honed my critical thinking skills by analysing a variety of information submitted by clients and checking whether they complied with common law principles and the Income Tax Act.
I am eagerly looking forward to my final placement, which will be with Immigration, Refugees and Citizenship Canada. I am convinced that it will again be a perfect opportunity to develop new skills!
