CO-OP Student of the month of April 2018
Program of study: Biopharmaceutical Science with Specialization in Genomics
For my first CO-OP work term, I travelled across the world to work with EduCARE India, a non-governmental organization that focuses on sustainable development at the grass-roots level. I had the opportunity to design, implement, and evaluate a project that helped identify and serve the health-related needs of an impoverished rural community. The knowledge I have gained in my studies thus far helped me organize workshops that not only effectively introduced important concepts, such as personal and preventive medicine, but also attempted to bridge some of the gaps between government services and local families. I fully immersed myself in Indian culture, and as a result, I acquired and strengthened many personal and professional skills. I also observed social issues from an entirely new perspective, and came to realize that the things we are taught have importance beyond the classroom. Although I am sad that this work term is quickly coming to an end, I look forward to new experiences in my future placements.
CO-OP placements provide incredible opportunities to explore a wide variety of possible career paths and gain valuable experience in your field of study. The support from the CO-OP team provides you with a sense of assurance that might otherwise be lacking: someone is always available to answer any questions or address any concerns you might have. I have already faced my share of challenges, but I was always well equipped with resources and information. Through my experiences, I have developed a newfound confidence, knowing that I can conquer any obstacles that may arise.
